MK ReEntry Seminar 2014

8.11.14 Biola MK ReEntry

This July, Bree and I were able to partner with the Narramore Christian Foundations’ MK ReEntry Seminar at Biola University.  It was an incredible 2-week program that gave MKs a unique chance to process their cross-cultural transition to the USA as well as into college.

This FUN-FILLED seminar had some very practical objectives:

Orientation: We talked about American culture—the good and the bad, college life, friendships and dating, and finances. There was several off-campus social and recreational outings, including the beach, and an amusement park.

Assessment: Personality tests that assess personal adjustment and identify growing edges.

Adjustment: Christian educators and counselors, with a heart for missions and a love for teens, encouraged and guided students in addressing areas for personal, social, and spiritual growth.

Challenge: Daily meetings, nightly dorm devotions, and informal conversations with staff and fellow MKs challenged students to trust God more fully and give new understanding to the Christian life.

One of the students said:

“As my family and I left South America earlier this year I didn’t shed a tear. All I felt was an empty numb feeling. All my lifelong friends where at the airport to see us off but I still couldn’t feel it.
I wondered what I was missing; why couldn’t I feel it?
This morning I felt it, all of it, as I said goodbye to all of you I felt that I was also saying goodbye to South America.
Thank you all so much for, well everything, I have felt a new kind of friendship with all of you that I have never felt before.
It all seems like a dream now that I’m back in the USA, but I will never forget the Reentry seminar.”

What a joy it was to be a part of this amazing program. We can’t wait for next year!

MK Caregivers Conference ’14

Last month, we had an awesome opportunity to attend the Missionary Kid Caregivers Conference in Kansas City, MO.  More than 50 professionals from seventeen mission agencies profited from formal presentations and informal discussions on the subject of discipleship of missionary kids and families, among other things.

We were so blessed as our ministry network exploded with new contacts.  It was one solid week of incredible conversations and brainstorming.  Can’t wait to see what God has in store for all that we learned.

IMG_6287Our New Tribes MK Care team also took advantage of the gathering and held some team meetings of our own which was wonderful considering most of our meetings are held over conference calls.

Practical Living Skills Trip

10.20.13 Practical Living

We recently had an opportunity to go on a three-day Practical/Survival skills trip.  The purpose was to help equip New Tribes Mission missionaries as they live and or visit remote locations in the deep jungles where unreached people groups often live.

We knew it was going to be a doozy of a trip when we learned we would be hiking everything in (including food) and would have to find our base camp via GPS coordinates, map, and compass.  The experience was great! … fun may not be the best way to describe if I’m honest, but VERY beneficial for sure.  Through we had rain and chilly temps that dipped into the 30’s at night, we had a chance to learn and practice a ton.

Very glad NTM values equipping and training so much… It makes a huge difference.

8.31.13 MTC Life - Our Ministries

Here at MTC, we are to be involved in ministry within the local community. Bree is currently working with a local teen pregnancy center and I am working with our local YoungLife chapter.  We are both additionally involved in a youth group made up of the high school Missionary Kids whose parents work at the MTC.  What a cool way to get into the community here and have a chance to put what we learn into practice!

Summer @ Windermere

8.31.13 Summer @ Windermere

We had a great summer serving at Windermere Christian Camp in Missouri.  We were the summer staff coordinators for 56 high school and college aged students. Our apartment was situated right smack in the middle of the dorm area and so we often had students in our home well past midnight playing board games and watching movies.  Our roles consisted of running bible studies, organizing the Sunday staff church, and planning about one event/activity a week.  If that didn’t keep us busy enough, we also managed the camp’s giftshop.  Pete managed the finances and inventory while Bree managed the store staff, designed merchandise, and often ran the register.  So the summer consisted of many hats, but somehow God used the time to grow us tremendously in our faith, patience, and abilities.

In you’re interested we have pictures on our Facebook http://on.fb.me/17aF357

We are now moved back into our little apartment at New Tribes Missionary Training Center for our FINAL semester of training.
